Douai Abbey: The Monastery of St Edmund, King & Martyr
Published in News · 14 February 2021
» Douai has not been spared the recent freezing weather, though with only light flurries of snow in Berkshire rather than any sizeable dump.

» Fr Abbot and Fr Oliver closed the canonical visitation of Worth Abbey on 8 February.

» The Douai Abbey Parishes Trust met on 11 February, via Zoom, and discussed, among other matters, the possibilities for renewed evangelisation in our parishes once pandemic restrictions are lifted.

»The bursar, Fr Oliver, is investigating the installation of ground-source heat pumps in the monastery complex, to reduce our fuel bills. The library already is heated in this way and is always warm and comfortable to use.

On the night of 12 February, David Hugh Farmer died at his home in Pangbourne. As a young man he had been a monk at Quarr Abbey. After he left there he would go on to become a distinguished historian, holding the position of Reader in Anglo-Saxon history at the University of Reading. He is the author of a number of books, many dealing with monastic topics, though his most famous, and successful, was The Oxford Dictionary of Saints. He had been a lon-standing parishioner and friend of the community. May he rest in peace.
