Chapter part 2
13 July 2021
» On Tuesday, 6 July the annual conventual chapter conluded, with the main business being the election of abbot's councillors which had been delayed from February due to Covid restrictions. Revised regulations from Rome on voting by those not not able to be physically present, but only "virtually", enabled us to hold the election at last. Fr Gervase noted that it was the first time in mnay years that every member of chapter was present to partivipate directly in the chapter. Only a couple of the parish fathers, and Fr Edmund in Rome, needed to use Zoom, but Zoom enabled them to participate directly. Fathers Peter, Paul and Hugh were returned to the council. For some of the non-resident brethren this chapter was the first time they had been at the monastery for well over a year.
» Next day the abbey church hosted the memorial Requiem Mass for David Hugh Farmer, eminent historian and long-time friend and parishioner of the monastery. Fr Abbot was the celebrant. Despite Covid restrictions the Mass was suitably simple, serene and beautiful, with a fine eulogy given after the Mass by David's son, Paul. After the Mass the congregation and some of the monks decamped to the pavillion in Douai Park for lunch. May David rest in peace.
