A Quiet Week & a Discovery
» It has been an uneventful week at the monastery. Yesterday there was another in the series of Zoomed conferences organised by the EBC Continuing Formation Committee relating to the pandemic. This time the presention was by Fr Roger Dawson SJ.
» Fr Oliver reports that he received an enquiry from a letter carver who was trying to track down a certain tablet carved by the late lettercarver Ralph Beyer, who was associated with the famous typography and carving work of Eric Gill and David Jones. Beyer is most famous for his work at Coventry Cathedral which he completed from 1956-62. It turns out the tablet in question is the foundation stone for the new monastery which is set outside the community's calefactory. This unrecognized connection with Beyer is worthy of note. Below is a photo of the foundation stone and an example of Beyer's work at Coventry Cathedral.
