The Glass in St Mary's Church (2)

THE NAVE GLASS

The glass around the nave is said by Pevsner to be French, which is quite possible as Wigley was trained in Paris.

Resurrection window Ss George & Edmund Ss Charles & Vincent
This pair of windows in the north wall of the nave depicts two scenes of the risen Christ. In 'noli me tangere' on the left he is seen as the gardener by Mary Magdalen. Notice the gardener's hat and spade.

The scene on the right is of doubting Thomas being invited to place his hand into the side of Christ.

These four windows are in the south aisle wall. Reading from left to right, the first window depicts St George, Patron of England (and of George Wigley, the architect) with a very timid dragon. The second, which shows St Edmund, Patron of the Abbey, was put in in 1974 as a memorial to Fr Oswald Dorman OSB, Parish Priest 1954-70. The third window shows St Charles Borromeo, Patron of Seminaries and a favourite of Wigley (St Mary's College attached to the church was a minor seminary), and the forth St Vincent de Paul. Wigley had been a founder member of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

This pair of windows in the narthex of the church was erected as a memorial to David Brister, who was a pupil of Douai School, 1963-67, and who was killed in a mountaineering accident in the Himalayas in May 1975, whilst training with army mountaineers for an Everest expedition.
