Community Prayer

"Let nothing be preferred to the work of God."

At the centre of the 'work of God' is prayer, communal and individual. The communal worship of the community in the Abbey Church is the heart of its life.
At Douai the monks come together four times a day to pray together in the liturgy of the hours, the office, in addition to celebrating the eucharist.

Each office contains
  • psalms
  • readings from Scripture
  • a hymn
  • prayers.
At Matins there is also a reading from a major Christian writer.

The three gospel canticles are sung each day,

  • the Benedictus at Matins
  • the Magnificat at Vespers (Evening Praise)
  • the Nunc Dimittis at Compline (Night Prayer).
The final office each day concludes with an anthem in honour of the Blessed Virgin.

Monastery guests and all who visit the church are welcome to join the monks in the choir for the offices.

The order of psalms sung at Douai is given here for the benefit of those who would like to pray with us in their homes.
At Matins and Midday Prayer a four week cycle is followed,
at Vespers, which is sung in Latin, a one week cycle, that of the Antiphonale Monasticum.
[On Solemnities and Festivals a special arrangement of psalms is used.]
Compline, however, is unchanged every day of the year.

A short reading from scripture follows.
The Benedictus is sung

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has turned to his people and set them free;
he has raised up a deliverer of victorious power
from the house of his servant, David.

So he promised age after age
by the mouth of his holy prophets,
that he would deliver us from our enemies,
out of the hands of all who hate us;

that he would deal mercifully with our fathers,
calling to mind his solemn covenant.
Such was the oath he swore to our father, Abraham,
to rescue us from the hand of our enemies;

that free from fear we might serve him
with a holy worship,
with uprightness of heart in his presence
all the days of our life.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins.

For in the tender compassion of our God
the morning sun from heaven will rise upon us,
to shine on those in darkness under the cloud of death,
to guide our feet in the way of peace.
