9. Benedictine Spirituality
A GROWING phenomenon, world wide, is the serious interest shown by lay people in Benedictine spirituality. One sign of this is the great increase in the number of Oblates.Their number far exceeds that of professed monastics.
An increasing interest in the Rule of St Benedict as a guide for Christian living, and, in particular for use in the workplace is a feature of contemporary society. The success of the Spirituality in the Workplace retreat/workshops that Fr Dermot Tredget OSB organises at Douai gives witness to this, as do the continuing ‘follow-up’ events, whether in the form of further weekends or in the various daytime events that participants themselves organise at Douai. In addition Fr Dermot is increasingly called upon to give courses and retreats on the topic at other venues, even purely secular ones.
We have already mentioned elsewhere the University of Reading Dayschool being planned on Benedictine monasticsm next year, and we are being asked to lead similar events elsewhere.
Another sign of this growing interest is the large number of books on Benedictine spirituality published each year, many of them by oblates from various Christian traditions.
In the growingly materialist world, where the bottom line is invariably a financial one, people are finding the principles enshrined in the Rule of St Benedict offer a better and more human alternative. For a Christian St Benedict offers a sound basis for daily living.‡
